Thanks for your opinion Brian.

They have implemented some changes in an effort to retain some of the better writers that have contributed there in the past. I still feel that they are missing the mark with creating a solid model for constantly increasing the quality of the content on their website. Tightening existing controls is not the ultimate answer. They will drive away more people who are writing good content. The people publishing the low quality content will continue to do so. It seems so obvious to me that I just don't understand their line of thinking about this.

I was never a contributor but I've read many ezine articles and I thought those articles carried great information until this new issue of ezine surfaced. The three stage review process sounds brilliant to me and if ezine is really in deep trouble the tips and strategies mentioned in this article should sort out most of the mess.
Ezine has always been known for it's great articles, hope it fixes the problem from the grassroot level and win back the trust of it's loyal readers again.

Hey Mitch,

I think the changes will have a long term positive effect on EzineArticles.com. The damage has been so severe though that it will probably take years for them to get back to the revenue level they were at.

It looks like you got your wish, with Google's help. After Google penalized them and their traffic started to drop, they decided to indeed change their standards, along with dropping the EzineArticles plugin option. It will be interesting to see how those changes end up working for them.

Hey James,

I don't think those autobloggers should be counting their chickens too soon. I wouldn't doubt if they wake up one morning soon to find that they have been hit. They are stupid for talking about it at all. Just like stupid criminals who brag about their crimes, they will get caught. Someone is listening.

Believe it or not this might actually open up more of an opportunity for Adsense bloggers. They won't have as much competition for that low hanging long tail fruit.
We shall see.

I think it is probably on your end, but I am not sure. I see it is working for me and James. It could be that there is an update for the plugin too. I will check for that on my end. It has been so long that I worked on this blog that I think there is probably a newer version of that plugin.

Nice post on your site there.

Kathy -

You're right about freelancing and unique content being a solid business these days. I just got out of freelancing last month to work my passive income entirely, thankfully it's all still peaches and cream.

The algo change seems to have a funny thread at the Warrior Forum, I forget where - but the autobloggers there are saying they've had a boost from it...too funny. Or not.

So: Ezine is out but crummy autoblogs are still ranking? Not sure what niches, or if it matters - but the overall tenor of the thread is that these autobloggers, if niche-specific, are doing just fine.

Incredible. I think it's a big PR piece for Google, especially taking heat from the NY Times piece on JC Penney scamming links and ranking just fine - Google's facing irrelevance if they don't do things like this to plume their feathers.

I haven't been hit yet - but then again...I stubbornly believe you should actually WRITE before PUBLISHING....I'm weird that way.

Good to see you back!

Hi Kathy. Here is a funny story about them. I received a mug and coaster in the mail from them a while back. Now I know that surely they sent out TONS of these to their "writers", but it gave me fodder for a blog post so I took advantage of it here: http://blog.newhorizons123.com/did-you-make-someone-feel-special-today/. I submitted it to EzineArticles.com and it was REJECTED. The reason they gave? They didn't want anyone thinking I worked for them or had any other affiliation other than being a writer. OK...... LOL

Do you have any idea why the comment luv doesn't work for me here? Is it on my end?

Thanks Julie.

You commented about not getting articles approved on there. That is one of my main beefs with their review process. I hear from a lot of people that they get good articles rejected for something stupid. Some people can publish a handful of articles that get approved and they instantly earn platinum status as an author. Then others can submit excellent quality material and get it rejected for something ridiculous like using the words "my blog" inside their article.

It's their site. So, they can be utra-picky if they want to. Still, you aren't going to retain the best writers when you insult them by telling them that the article they just spent the last hour writing is not up to their standards. It would not be insulting if they did not allow low quality crap on there. But, it is insulting because they allow spam to get on there while repeatedly rejecting material from professional writers.

Hi Kathy. Would you believe that I was literally just thinking about you? Seriously. Thanks for coming out of your cave to provide real value. I can't pretend to fully understand how Google works but I have always been a proponent of value being the only thing that really matters in all aspects of life. I didn't know that EzineArticles.com was affected so badly by the new algorithm but have also had some difficulty getting some of my articles published with them. Some went through without a hitch and others - for no reason easily apparent to me, didn't make the cut.

Welcome back and I look forward to hearing more from you,

This post is an eye opener. Most of online business articles on the Web contain nearly cloned stuff on how you should create blogs to support your business, and how you should use social media to fuel traffic on that blog.

I completely agree with you in regards of social media. Though the general traffic may be similar to search engines or even bigger, they considerably lose in regards of "target" traffic (as people who get to your blog were not preliminary interested in the stuff your offer) which in its turn results in less page views and less money. And still social media require much more commitment and time, you should work 24/7 for really vague results.

Though not absolutely related to blogging, I would like to share my personal experiences and ideas as based on your topic if blog is a business or a job. Like what you’ve said, yes, there are so many distinctions between the two. Currently, I’m a freelancer online and a businessman offline. Between the two, I feel more secure with being a businessman since I’m one of the owners of our business. We built our business because we are expecting to expand it in the near future. On the other hand, as a freelancer, I felt no security. That’s why I’m trying to earn money as much as I can and save it. Then I’m also thinking of investing it online too, that gives me the chance to think for a long term benefit of being a freelancer online. But, yes but! Do I consider this as a job? Not really! Because I’m considering it as an investment. Every move I do online, I think of it as an investment. All learning is an investment for me. In that way, I enjoy my work online and consider it as my future business.

I loved Rich Dad Poor Dad. It really shifted my mindset on the way I look at finances, investments, and personal time. You make a lot of great points in this post. It is important to decide up front what you would like to accomplish with your blog. Your day to day plan is going to be different depending on your goal.

I agree, then again - i've never known anyone who's managed to build a business without creating the job first. People fail at blogging because they cant turn their "jobs" into business.

As a veteran of 10 years in owning businesses, you are so right. We are now getting to the stage where we can hire more people and have more time to ourselves (ie a weekend - lol). the industry I am in takes on average 10 years to break even, different to the internet industry (depending on what you are doing) as it takes longer to build up a reputation and become reliable. Sticking with it is important, we felt like giving up several times, but only if it is going to work. We found a great mentor and that made a difference, sometimes you are so involved you cannot see what really needs doing!

Kathy: I love your "live in abundance through generosity" philosophy... and many thanks for posting the Creed video with lyrics. Made my morning break a little more musical.

SEO's nature is to raise the noise floor for any given search result. The worst offenders are the link farms and unethical splogs, comment spammers, etc.

A semantic search method (e.g., Hunch.com is a very early attempt at this) is a solution to provide more meaningful results. Bookmarking is also a good way (along with your suggestion to use CommentLuv).

Are you aware of any changes to the Google algorithm to favor more organic links?

Google uses linear and statistical algorithms to generate search results. These are probably inferior to an adaptive heuristic approach -- but all of this is speculation.

Have you found any research to support your theories about building links through comments?

Many thanks. And I do love your blog (now bookmarked).

@Kathy: After reading your post twice, I have one small question here:
"You can accomplish this by increasing the number of new pages on your website and using those new pages to point to existing higher value ones on there."

You say that each new post/page you create on a website starts with "power" just from being created? I thought that this "power" comes from external and/or internal links pointing to that page...
